Click on this post to see a selection of pictures from Woodsmoke XLIV, held at McDaniel Farms on the beautiful weekend of December 6-8, 2024. The members of the Woodsmoke Brigade hope that everyone who attended learned something this weekend, whether it was how to load and shoot a blackpowder rifle, throw a tomahawk, cook in a dutch oven, or how to sleep warm in frosty conditions.
The Woodsmoke Brigade has existed for 44 years for the purpose of teaching “the old ways” to new generations of Scouts. This weekend, Badleg told me that he had made a lot of mistakes over the years in rendezvousing, but that those mistakes helped him learn better ways to do things. He went on to say that he wanted to share what he had learned with others, because “what good will it do anyone if I don’t share what I have learned?” This is the true spirit of Woodsmoke, and we hope the Scouts have been inspired by something this weekend to learn more about this important time in the history of our country.
